Kaitangata mining disaster

On the morning of 21 February 1879, an explosion happened at the coalmine at Kaitangata, South Otago. when the crash happened there were 47 men working at the time of the disaster. At first, no one knew how many were underground.By early evening, it was clear that 34 men had been underground and that none had survived.

James K. Baxter

James was New Zealand’s most accomplished poets. He had devoted the last years of his life  helping people who were doing drugs and drinking alcohol.He died in Auckland, aged 46.

Jean Batten

Jean Batten left for New Zealand from Kent, England, at 4.20 a.m. on 5 October 1936. Despite the early hour, a large media contingent gathered to see her off; Batten was already famous for her successful solo flights from England to Australia in May 1934, and to South America in November 1935.She landed at Auckland at approximately 6.30am 16/10/36
