Chief Justice Sir James

 Today in NZ history, Chief Justice Sir James Prendergast’s statements when delivering judgment in the case of Wi Parata vs The Bishop of Wellington would influence decision-making on Treaty of Waitangi issues for decades.Prendergast was attorney-general from 1865 to 1875, and then chief justice of the Supreme Court until 1899.

Jean Batten

Jean Batten left for New Zealand from Kent, England, at 4.20 a.m. on 5 October 1936. Despite the early hour, a large media contingent gathered to see her off; Batten was already famous for her successful solo flights from England to Australia in May 1934, and to South America in November 1935.She landed at Auckland at approximately 6.30am 16/10/36
